The Mary Campbell Sampler The Mary Campbell Sampler is an exact reproduction of an antique sampler in the collection of McIntosh Samplers. Some of the flowers are not centered ove r the pots, the lettering is irregular, and most interesting is the use of the word "lose" instead of "loss" in the verse. There are two dates on the sampler; 1841 in the third row, and 1844 at the end of the verse. It is believed that Mary was stitching on the third row in 1841 and didn't finish the sampler until 1844. Colors are brown, blue-green, green, olive, dark gold, and garnet. When worked on 28-count linen, the sampler measures 17 1/4" x 18". Worked entirely in cross stitch, most of the sampler i s worked over two threads of linen, the exception being the verse which is worked over one thread. The verse reads: The lose of gold is much, The lose of time is more, The lose of Christ is such, The world can neer restor". Chart $12.00.
